Helotes Fitness Park Gets New Walking Trail

February 16, 2018.

The City of Helotes Public Works Department has been working hard the past couple of weeks on their largest single project to date. They are installing a much needed and requested asphalt walking trail around the perimeter of the Helotes Fitness Park located at the corner of FM 1560 and Parrigin Road. It is adjacent to the Helotes Natural Area and Disc Golf Course. The trail will be 6 feet wide and approximately one-third mile long. More than a dozen fitness stations are scattered along the length of the trail allowing visitors to do exercises including stretching, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, balancing and climbing.
The trail has been on our list of goals since we first began designing and installing the fitness stations about two years ago. It is now possible because we have a public works department that is well equipped to do the work and a fully staffed crew with the skills needed to get the job done. We decided to complete the project at this time so it will be ready in time for spring weather and also because of the generous donation of 650 tons of road base material that we used for the compacted base for the asphalt surface. Martin Marietta Materials located north of Helotes at 17928 State Highway 16 N made the donation of base and we hauled all of the material with the dump truck we acquired from federal surplus last year

Be sure to stop by and enjoy the park. We have three pavilions that were built as Eagle Scout projects and each pavilion has picnic tables for you to use for an afternoon or weekend picnic. If you have never played disc golf, go to YouTube to find instructions for the game and watch it being played. We have discs available at City Hall that are available to check out during business hours if you don’t have discs of your own. Our course is well-known as one of the best midrange courses in Bexar County and has been used to host many tournaments since we installed the equipment several years ago. Disc golf is a great way to exercise and is a fun sport for all ages. See you at the park.
